Sandhya Suri on ‘Santosh’, the powerful film about powerlessness

Plus: Reviews of The Diplomat, Perusu, Be Happy and Sea of Love.

Here are this week's top stories from The Reel.

Sandhya Suri was born and raised in England, but her heart lies in her country of origin, evident in her documentaries I for India and Around India With a Movie Camera as well as her debut feature Santosh. Starring a terrific Shahana Goswami, the film explores a police constable’s investigation into the rape and murder of a Dalit teenager.

Santosh has been screened at a few festivals in India, but hasn’t been released her yet. Someday, perhaps.

BookMyShow is bringing back its Red Lorry Film Festival for residents of Mumbai and Hyderabad. September 5, The Last Showgirl, Anora, Queer and The Outrun are among the big-ticket titles.

The sexy whodunit Sea of Love, starring Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin, is the pick in the series Start the week with a film.

The Diplomat is out in cinemas. Shivam Nair’s thriller, based on an actual case, stars John Abraham and Sadia Khateeb.

Ilango Ram’s Perusu is also out in cinemas. Vaibhav leads the comedy about a pair of brothers dealing with their dead father – who’s also not entirely dead. The film is a remake of the Sri Lankan film Tentigo.

Abhishek Bachchan and Inayat Verma plays father and daughter in Remo D’Souza’s Be Happy.

Four Indian directors direct a film each for the anthology My Melbourne, set in the Australian city.
